Buying a used motorcycle: a simple checklist

What to check on the engine, body and papers before you pay for a second-hand bike.

4 min readUpdated 04-Nov-2026

Engine and ride

  • Start it cold: it should start in a few kicks.
  • No blue or white smoke after it warms up.
  • No knocking or loud tappet noise.
  • Clutch doesn't slip when you accelerate in top gear.

Body and accident signs

  • Front forks straight, no oil leaking from them.
  • Frame without welding or fresh paint patches.
  • The bike rides straight and the handle doesn't pull to one side.

Papers

Match the chassis and engine numbers on the bike with the registration book. Confirm ownership and tax status on your provincial Excise & Taxation department's online verification, and transfer the bike in your name. Rules and fees can change, so check the latest with the department.
