When to change motorcycle engine oil

How to check the oil level, signs it needs changing, and how to make sure you actually get fresh oil and a new filter.

Why oil matters

Engine oil keeps the moving parts of the engine from grinding against each other and carries heat away. Old or low oil wears the engine faster and can make it noisy and hot. How often to change it depends on your bike, the oil used and how you ride, so your bike's manual is the best guide. Dusty roads, heavy traffic, short trips and carrying loads mean the oil should be changed sooner.

Check the level yourself

  • Park the bike on level ground on its centre stand, if it has one, and let the engine cool for a few minutes.
  • Look at the oil window or dipstick as your manual shows. The level should sit between the minimum and maximum marks.
  • Black is normal after some use. Be careful if the oil looks milky, has metal glitter, or smells burnt.

Getting the change done properly

  • Use the oil grade and type your manual names, and buy a sealed bottle yourself or watch it being opened.
  • Ask for the old oil to be fully drained and the drain bolt tightened properly, with a new washer if needed.
  • Ask if the oil filter or strainer also needs cleaning or changing at this service.
  • Check for leaks under the bike after the first ride, and note the date and kilometres for next time.
